Avocado tree quandary #866953

Asked May 03, 2024, 6:32 PM EDT

We've raised our 10' tall avocado tree from a pit. It goes outside for the summer, and comes back in for the winter. Problem: it's grown so tall that we're running out of spaces with sufficient clearance. I've seen photos from folks in restricted urban grow spaces, where the tree bends over and begins to twist around. Is this my fate? I need to get it back out for season - it clearly misses the sun, and has dropped tons of leaves this winter - but I'm worried that it will outgrow my ceiling this year. Advice?

Thank you for your question.  I suggest that you try pruning off the leader, to promote more lateral growth.  This WSU article may be helpful:  https://depts.washington.edu/hortlib/pal/growing-avocado-plant-indoors/

Good luck!
