Hello

As the previous assessments here on this  oak tree stated, there are many causes of the damage shown in your picture.

The wound at the base is old, probably mechanical damage from lawn mowers and string trimmers over the years. These wounds get secondary issues such as rot fungi, cankers and insect pests.

The worms are likely a secondary pest just taking advantage of the moist rotting wood.

Good tree care that will help all trees including this one:

Remove a large circle of the lawn and plants around the base of the tree.

Mulch that area with wood chips, pine straw, or shredded bark 2-3 inches deep.

Keep mulch pulled away from the trunk so it doesn’t touch the wound or any bark.

Be sure the ground is graded so that water does not puddle around the trunk.

( the above will help keep the wounded area dry as possible)

If we have a drought this summer or this fall, deeply and slowly water the tree so that soil is moist 6 inches down after watering. Do not let sprinklers wet the bark of the tree.

To get the worms identified email your pictures to MSU Diagnostic lab at <personal data hidden> This is a free service.

If the lab needs samples, there is a small fee for Identification-
