Red Oak Root #866904

Asked May 03, 2024, 1:41 PM EDT

I am worried about our Red Oak tree. An exposed root seems to be weeping and rotting. A closer look today showed some tiny white worms in it. Hoping for some guidance. I bought some prune seal but thought maybe I need to do more.

Expert Response

Hello Sheila,

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, oak trees are susceptible to many diseases and insect attacks. Read more here: https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/oak-diseases-insect-pests/

It is difficult to assess what is causing the problem from a picture. A more accurate way to assess what is going on with the trees is to send a sample and/or picture to the MSU Extension Plant and Pest Diagnostic Lab. To learn how to submit a sample, go to:

https://www.canr.msu.edu/pestid/

A certified arborist will be able to assess your tree. You can also contact a certified arborist at www.treesaregood.org, the International Society of Arboriculture to find an arborist in your area.

Thanks for contacting Ask Extension.
