Health of Honeysuckle #866902

Asked May 03, 2024, 1:25 PM EDT

Hello, we have this honeysuckle bush in our yard. It appears to have been there for sometime. This Spring we noticed an area that is peeling. Is it diseased or dying? We are re-landscaping that area and want to plan accordingly.

Expert Response

Hello,

Peeling bark on a honeysuckle bush can be concerning, but it’s not always a sign of disease or that the plant is dying. In some cases, bark peeling can be a part of a plant’s natural growth process. However, if the peeling is accompanied by other symptoms such as discoloration, cankers, or the presence of pests, it could indicate a problem. According to Michigan State University Extension, some trees and shrubs naturally lose bark over time as part of their aging process. This can include peeling or shedding of bark during the spring and summer months. It’s important to note that while this information is specific to trees, some shrubs may exhibit similar behaviors. Keeping an eye on the overall health of the plant, including leaf condition and new growth, can also provide clues to the health of your honeysuckle bush.

I hope this helps!
