Asked May 03, 2024, 12:59 PM EDT

HI! Looking for help identifying this grass. Established a foothold in my "native" area, is now rapidly spreading. Worried about reed canary / quack grass, not strong with grass ID. Thx

Expert Response

While we can positively identify a weed from a photo, it looks like you have quack grass.

Pulling it is the preferred management in a native area but you will have to decide the extent of the spread and if that is viable. It spreads by underground rhizomes so pulling is a continual task to get it under control. It’s a tough one to completely get rid of.

If you choose to spot spray be sure to follow the label instructions. Do not spray on windy days or when the temp is above 80 °. Wear protective clothing and don’t spray when other plants are flowering or you will be targeting pollinators.
