Linden Tree? #866831

Asked May 02, 2024, 8:07 PM EDT

Greetings, My wife and I and some friends were in Vergennes this past weekend and noticed some very attractive and interesting trees along Main Street across from the Vergennes Laundry restaurant. They are about 25' - 30' tall and have greenish-yellow blossoms all over the tree. The bark looks very much like an Ash but clearly is another species. Is this a Linden tree and is it also an invasive species? Thank you very much for your time and consideration, Wilfred Smith Norwich, VT 05055

Expert Response

Thank you for contacting the UVM Master Gardener Helpline with your question about the trees on Main Street in Vergennes.  Thank you for including the picture.

I consulted with experts at UVM and received the following response:

“Dr. Michael Sundue, Pringle Herbarium, said the tree is a Norway Maple. This can be considered an invasive tree. I imagine they were planted a while ago before they were considered invasive!”

Unfortunately, I confirmed that the Norway Maple Trees are on the Vermont Invasives website.  You can see more information at  https://www.vtinvasives.org/invasive/norway-maple.

The Vermont Invasives site is a great place to learn more about all the invasives that are currently impacting Vermont including aquatic invaders, insects, and plants.

I hope this information is helpful.  If you need more information, please feel free to reach out.
