Asked May 02, 2024, 6:50 PM EDT

We recently received a young red oak sapling from the Western Reserve Nature Conservancy . Today we noticed all the leaves have holes in them and yet we can’t figure out what is eating them . We don’t want to lose the tree. Please help

Expert Response

Hi. This looks to be the work from Cutter bees, which are solitary bees. They munch on little leaves circles like this. It doesn’t harm the tree. It may not look good right now, but it won’t harm the tree. Here’s a link that may be able to give you a little more information about Cutter bees. I would keep an eye on it but so far to me it doesn’t look like it’s going harm the tree. https://extension.colostate.edu/docs/pubs/insect/05576.pdf
