Advice on Planting Native Trees on 5-Acre Property in Gwynn Oak, Maryland #866819

Asked May 02, 2024, 5:45 PM EDT

Hi, I am seeking advice on planting native trees on a 5-acre property in Gywnn Oak, Maryland. The property borders a forest and is spotted with black walnut trees. I am interested in planting blueberries, American beech, tulip poplar, and black alder trees. However, I'd appreciate your guidance on: Where on my property would these specific trees be most suited for optimal growth and to create a healthy ecosystem? Are there any factors I should be particularly mindful of when planting these trees? Thank you for your time and assistance! Imauri

Hi,

We would not be able to recommend specific locations with out a site visit which is not a service we provide. We would recommend a professional to consult with you in person. You can search for someone to meet your needs on Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professionals website.

In general you will want to match the species with the site requirements needed for them to grow and thrive. Blueberry will need acidic fertile soil that doesn't get too wet or too dry. A soil test is a good way to determine if the site is appropriate for it.

Black alder will prefer consistent moisture or even flooded areas, but it is not native to the US or Maryland. Alnus serrulata  or Smooth Alder would be a better option.

Tulip Poplar and Beech are mixed deciduous woodland trees and would do fine amongst the black walnuts as well. Beech struggle with root disturbance so they should be placed away from where they would have heavy foot traffic.

Most likely there is deer presence so you will need to protect all new and young plants with fencing or caging so they can get established.
