Insects from Lowe's? #866813

Asked May 02, 2024, 5:20 PM EDT

Hi, I brought home three seedling plans from Lowe's garden center yesterday and today I noticed a small infestation of these little bugs that look like baby centipede (see pics)--they are furry and have tiny legs but are small like ant-size. Are they harmful? I assume it came with the Lowe's plans since they were not present prior to that purchase. Thank you!

Mark,

It's hard to see the insect, though I appreciate that you did you best you could with the photo. This is spongy moth season, when the new caterpillars are hatching, and that is my best guess on the identity of these insects. Spongy moths are a serious pest that attack tree leaves but do not usually permanently harm the plant. In any case, I'd try to be sure they don't spread, and frankly, I'd isolate the plants and return them to Lowe's asap.

BTW, what kind of plants are these?

I'm sorry not to be able to be more definitive for you, but I hope this helps.
