Can you train a floribunda rose bush to grow vertically on a trellis #866807

Asked May 02, 2024, 4:25 PM EDT

Hello,

My daughter has a beautiful floribunda rose bush outgrowing their tiny patio.  It is planted directly in front of the side of their garage.  She wants to know if it is possible to train the bush upwards on a trellis or other device so it will grow up the side of the garage.  Do you know if it is possible and if so, how you go about it?

Thank you,

Expert Response

Hello Margaret,

Unless it's a climbing variety (sounds like it's not), no, you can't really train a shrub rose up a trellis as if it were a climber. You can tie stems to supports, but it won't really push growth higher, so the stems might just get crowded instead from being confined to a narrower area (secured up versus sprawling around in all directions), therefore making the foliage more vulnerable to diseases from the reduced air circulation.
