I live in Western Colorado. I wish to cover my fence with a hearty vine that is safe for pets and thrives in direct sunlight. Is a Virginia Creeper safe?
Garfield County Colorado
Expert Response
Virginia creeper does well here and will cover a fence. It may also spread to where you don't want it; it can be pretty aggressive. The CSU Veterinary school guide to poisonous plants states that Virginia creeper can cause excessive salivation and vomiting, but that it is of minimal risk to animals, but you should check with your veterinarian.
Another option that is native to CO may be Western white clematis Clematis ligusticifolia. I would check with your veterinarian about the toxicity for pets.
Thank You!
