What is this clump grass? #866800

Asked May 02, 2024, 3:34 PM EDT

Hello

We have an open space behind our house. Over the past several years we have cleared out ivy to make way for native plants. I recently came across this large clump grass that I am unable to confidently identify. Largest plumes are almost 3 feet tall. The attached photos include osoberry and other smaller clump grasses.

What is it? And if non-native, what is the most effective way to remove it?

Thank you!

Expert Response

Hi Laura and thanks for your picture and question about your clump of grass. It is Carex pendula, or Hanging Sedge and you are going to want to get rid of it! Digging it up is best but be sure to cut off the seed heads first and put them in the trash. Then keep an eye out for any further infestations. Here's an article from Mason County Washington with further information:

Thanks for checking on this mystery grass!
