will bonita stump and vine killer harm my doug fir tree? (Multnomah county) #866794

Asked May 02, 2024, 2:50 PM EDT

I'd like to use this product ("triclopyr" ie 3,5,6-tricloro-2-pyridinyoxyaceticacid, as the triethylamine salt) to control blackberry vines that have taken over one corner of my yard in Portland. The container has a small brush in the top for painting the product onto the bare cut-off ends of the vines. It would be more efficient to put it into a dropper bottle to put a drop or two onto the cut vine stump. Either method could put a minute amount of this product into soil. Would this minute amount of the product be expected to harm the nearby Doug Fir? Thank you.

Expert Response

A drip or two on the soil surface should not cause harm to a mature Douglas-fir.

I would not recommend transferring this herbicide to another container or application. This would potentially expose you to a concentrated pesticide. It's also recommended to keep pesticides in their original packaging as it lists the active ingredient. This becomes important in the event of an emergency.

Apply the herbicide within ten minutes of cutting the blackberry. If the treatment isn't effective, you may need to repeat it in early fall.

With any pesticide application, always read and follow the label for use and safety instructions.
