Every website basically says us AG lime in your chicken coop to control pests (like mites) and smell. This site specifically says NOT to use Ag Lime.... Is there an effective and affordable alternative?

Expert Response

Agricultural lime is calcium carbonate (CaCO3). It is used to raise pH levels in the soil and can be used to provide calcium for plants.

For your purposes, you'd want quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) or hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2). You will want to be careful when using either product because the products can burn your (and your birds') skin and mucus membranes.
