I live in Gilpin County, altitude 8800 feet. could I grow black walnuts

Gilpin County Colorado

Expert Response

Black walnuts can grow in zones 4-9. We are zones 3 or 4 here in Gilpin. I think you could manage to grow the tree, but our cold temperatures would probably keep it from producing nuts. In addition, the tree would need an amended growing medium, lots of compost and soil high in organic matter. It would also need regular watering.
