Pulling garlic mustard #866735

Asked May 02, 2024, 9:33 AM EDT

I’m getting ready to do my annual May pulling garlic mustard. LOL The garlic mustard is now up with the white flower at its tip. Can I just break off the garlic mustard at ground-level or do I have to pull the roots out also? I just toss it aside after pulling I am hoping you say it is OK to just break off and toss aside. If I remember correctly once the garlic mustard flower turns to seed I have to bag the garlic mustard. Thank you for your help, Kevin

Expert Response

Removal of garlic mustard must include both the plant and the root. It is essential to remove prior to the bloom developing into a seed pod. Garlic mustard that has gone to seed must be burned or bagged. Below is a link to additional information regarding garlic mustard.

Thanks much, Amy!! I really appreciate the info you sent.
I pulled this week and after all the rain it was easy to get roots out.
Too bad my neighbors don't do the same.
