Poison Hemlock #866658

Asked May 01, 2024, 3:30 PM EDT

I live in Portland. I just identified a Poison Hemlock plant growing on my slope. Should I try and kill this? Would round up work? It's really grown bigger in the last two weeks and is right at the edge of the street. I'm worried that someone could touch it as they walk by. Thanks!

Expert Response

Hi Alice and thanks for your question about getting rid of poison hemlock. Just brushing by the plant won't hurt someone, but kids do tend to put lots of things in their mouths and I think you are right to want to get rid of it.

I'll attach a brochure explaining removal, but basically if it's just a few plants you can dig them up wearing protective clothing and dispose of them in the trash. An herbicide containing glyphosate will also work, but be sure to read the directions and follow them VERY CAREFULLY.

Thank you for taking time to get rid of a toxic, noxious weed!
