We have voles in our lawn. How harmful are they? How do you treat for them? What happens if I don't do anything?

Livingston County Michigan

Expert Response

Hello Ed,

What is happening with your lawn that leads you to conclude you have voles? Vole damage to lawns appears after snow-pack melts. It is then that you discover the feeding on grass plants that occurred under the snow. In southeastern Michigan and Livingston county, there was not sufficient snow cover this winter to really protect voles as they fed.

Are you having lawn damage right now? Then it is not likely voles. It could be moles instead.
