Native landscaping needs #866617

Asked May 01, 2024, 1:13 PM EDT

We have a new home in a woodlands setting and need advice please: 1. Where do I find information on State of MI low cost seeding or native plantings? We do not want to plant grass, only ground coverings but have some sun/some shade and critters 2. Are there resources for affordable landscape design? And places to purchase needed seeds and plants and trees, at lower pricing?

What a great opportunity to plant native plants that grow well in Michigan!  Here are links to articles on ground covers and native plants for you to consider:

For plants I suggest contacting Prairie Moon Nursery (prairie moon.com) and Prairie Nursery (prairienursery.com) to get their catalogs as both sell native plant seeds and plants for shade. Other more local seed/plant sources include Michigan Wildflower Farm (michiganwildflowerfarm.com), Wildtypes (wildtypeplants.com) and East Michigan Native Plants (eastmichnatives.com). MSU Extension does not endorse any retailers or brands.
For landscape design help contact the Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association at: https://www.mnla.org/
I would also contact the Kent Conservation District (https://www.kentconservation.org/) for information on possible landscape design assistance and native plant sales.
