How to eradicate vine #866583
Asked May 01, 2024, 10:33 AM EDT
There is a vine growing in my vegetable garden (garden is 8' by 16') that has proliferated over the past few years. It grows very quickly and wraps around my plants and garden stakes/supports. On an Apple app, it is identified as hedge bindweed or black bindweed. Is there a way I can eradicate this weed from my garden and still keep my garden organic? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Thank you for contacting us regarding your question. Staying organic will limit some of your options of this obnoxious weed. It is best to get it early, but it sounds like it has established itself in your garden. There are several types of bindweed, hedge bindweed and field bindweed. They are very common and difficult to manage weeds. "Hand pulling seedlings or tilling young plants will have positive results. Mature plants, however, are difficult to pull without leaving fragments of roots and rhizomes that can resprout. Intensive cultivation controls new seedlings and young plants, but may spread roots and rhizomes" University of Nevada. Using mechanical controls will keep you organic but it is time consuming and will take vigilance. You can dig up newly emerged seedlings trying to get all of the roots, and with your more established plants, you will want to cut plants at ground level. And unfortunately, you will need to repeat this over the season to deplete the energy stored in the rhizomes. I am attaching two additional factsheets to give you more options on removing this weed.
