Newly established pet friendly lawn fertilizer #866562

Asked May 01, 2024, 7:08 AM EDT

Hello I am looking for fertilizer recommendations for a newly established lawn that is organic and pet friendly. I would like it to focus on the types recommended on your site: lalfalfa meal, Chilean nitrate, corn gluten, feather meal, and cottonseed meal with zero phosphorus. Is there a particular brand you recommend? Also, this is a new construction home and all valuable top soil was stripped away…it’s pretty much just clay. What soil conditioners would you recommend be added and when? Thank you! James

Expert Response

Hi, James,

Any fertilizer that complies with the MD lawn fertilizer law and recommended fertilization schedule should be fine. Extension doesn't compile brand information, and we do not recommend particular brands.

As your lawn is newly established, the best way to add soil conditioners is to return grass clippings to the soil surface for composting by mulch-mowing.This will improve soil organic matter content over time. You can't really top-dress an established lawn. Any added compost would have to be considered for the yearly maximum nutrient supplementation.

Thank you for your question.
