Strawberries #866561

Asked May 01, 2024, 12:34 AM EDT

Hi! I'm so happy to have someone to go to for questions! I started gardening a couple of years back and have so much to learn. This year, I ordered strawberries online, hoping they would be shipped at the end of May, but I got them today. I live in Custer, SD and my last frost day is May 25th. I am scared to death to plant my baby strawberries in the garden this early, even if I cover them with frost cloth. I normally start planting in the garden first part or mid-June. What do I do for now to keep them alive? Thank you!

Expert Response

As long as the soil is not frozen, and the strawberry plant hasn't broken dormancy (is it greening up or still brown) they can be planted. Still, use a little straw or pine needles to provide a layer of protection.

If you are super paranoid about them getting frost/freeze damage and they are starting to green up, you could also put them in an unheated garage or out-building until you feel more comfortable, but really it should be ok to plant and use the blanket if the forecast calls for nights in the 20s. Might be a few of those the next few nights so maybe wait until the weekend anyway. You should be setting them out in the late afternoon/evening so they acclimate to sunshine too. Good luck with your strawberries.
