Ants in horse pasture #866548

Asked April 30, 2024, 9:08 PM EDT

I have a pasture that horses are not currently on as I rotate for better forage. I am noticing an extreme amount of ant mounds throughout this pasture. I'm concerned they might be hindering my grass growth as I just completed overseeding a few weeks ago. Is there a product that I can apply to this 2 acre parcel that will kill these and not be dangerous for my horses when they are able to graze there in 3-4 weeks?. Also will the product hurt my new grass that has started coming up? Thank you. Jamie

Good afternoon, Jamie —
Our apologies for the delay in responding. I’m hearing from our experts that this is not something. And would appreciate some photographs of the ants hills and the surrounding area. Would you be able to attach a few few photos to this question?

Hi Jamie:

We would not recommend treating for these types of ants--these are likely just turf grass ants--these ants are typically only controlled on golf courses because they primarily cause aesthetic issues. You can read more about them https://www.canr.msu.edu/ipm/diseases/turfgrass-ant?language_id=
