What is growing in the vivid yellow fields? #866525

Asked April 30, 2024, 6:27 PM EDT

I am new to Oregon and love seeing various crops growing in the Willamette Valley. This spring the yellow fields are spectacular. Are the yellow flowers a crop that can be sold, or are they grown to benefit the soil as part of thoughtful crop rotation? The same flowers seem to be growing as weeds along the roads or the borders of planted fields.

Expert Response

There are a few different crops that are yellow and look similar, but it could be canola and often volunteer (weedy) canola can grow along roadways. It could also be a seed crop as well. Canola is grown to be crushed and made into canola oil (also known as rapeseed oil).
