Ground covers on poor rocky soil #866496

Asked April 30, 2024, 3:13 PM EDT

We have a 45 - 55 degree bank that was created by some excavation work last summer. It was seeded with a conservation mix and greened up quite nicely, but the grass doesn't look llke it's coming back. I'm looking for some kind of perennial ground cover that we could use on poor soil like this. Can you give us recommendations? Thank you.

Hello Vicki & Russell:

The following resource has some great suggestions for your project - https://www.uvm.edu/sites/default/files/Extension-Community-Horticulture/Best_Plants_for_30_Tough_Sites_UMN.pdf

Check out the section on Steep Slopes, page 34.

Hope this helps, and let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you for that reference.

Do you think that dead nettle or violets would survive under sunny, rocky conditions? I've had success with them in the past, but they were partly shaded by trees.

Thank you.

Hi Vicki & Russell,

Both Dead nettle and Violets thrive in a partial shade, moist environment but Dead nettle is generally more sun tolerant than most Violet varieties. A few like the common blue violet can tolerate a full sun location.  Both of these can be a good option for a ground cover in the right area and can also be a troublesome, vigorous invasive.  You'll just want to be prepared for either outcome if you go with one of these plants.

Here is a resource with a bit more information about dead nettle: https://extension.psu.edu/lawn-and-turfgrass-weeds-dead-nettle

And one about violets: https://extension.psu.edu/native-violets
