Larvae identification help? #866399

Asked April 29, 2024, 9:51 PM EDT

Hello! I found this larvae in an area food is stored in (food service ish) and I'm hoping to find out what it is! I'm worried it's the first of many? It was found under the trim of a wall, about 4 feet up. The immediate environment I found it in was dry and dark, with what looked like dryer lint. There are several areas nearby that would provide moisture.

Expert Response

Hi and thanks for your question and picture of the larva in your food area. This looks like the larva of a meal moth or pantry moth. The "lint" was probably the webbing they make and you might see some of the little gray/brown moths flying around from time to time.

Check any boxes or open containers for more critters (you will have to throw them out or feed them to your chickens). Make sure all food is sealed in airtight containers. Clean the area thoroughly if you find more. There are pheromone traps you can put near the food areas to check and see if the infestation is over. I'll attach a website with pictures and more information about the traps.

It's a common problem, just takes time and effort to clean up!

Good luck!
