squirrels eating elm twigs #866391

Asked April 29, 2024, 8:29 PM EDT

Hi, Squirrells are eating my 4 elm trees alive! They are chewing off twigs at the end of the branches at a rate where it is raining twigs. Will this harm the trees? Thank you. Fred Wolf

Expert Response

Hi Fred,

Great question, this is certainly common squirrel behavior in the spring! Fortunately, while it may be quite annoying, it is unlikely to kill your trees. This guide from the University of Nebraska has more information on this behavior and some suggestions on preventing tree damage - https://wildlife.unl.edu/pdfs/control-tree-squirrel-damage.pdf

However, the options are rather limited to keep squirrels from tree habitats. Best of luck!
