Year old planted jackpine seedlings turning brow. #866389

Asked April 29, 2024, 8:12 PM EDT

I was wondering if you would take a look at the pictures I have attached. I have about 2000 pine tree seedlings planted last spring. In the last few days they have started to turn brown. Any thoughts or is this normal? Is there anything I should spray on them to help?

Expert Response

Usually young seedlings would have been snow covered for most of the winter.  With little snow they were exposed to lots of cold wind which can dry out needles. The dry weeks also may be contributing.  If this is the cause, they are likely to outgrow the browning.
Since you have so many trees I recommend an onsite assessment by an arborist to check for disease. Or you could send a sample to the Plant disease clinic if you see signs of disease.
