American Elm Tree #866285

Asked April 29, 2024, 12:10 PM EDT

I have a beautiful American Elm that I discovered growing in my back yard when I had a box elder removed about 8 years ago. It was about 8 feet tall then.and is now 35-40 feet with a large canopy. It appears very healthy but I'm concerned about the old Dutch Elm Disease. Should I have it treated? With what?

Good evening and thank you for reaching out. Would it be possible for you to attach a few photos of the tree to this question? Photos really help our experts respond with solid recommendations.

Hi Mark! I applaud your wish to protect your Elm. I feel that the best course of action for you would be to have your tree evaluated by a qualified arborist - to find one, I have included a link to the ISA (the Michigan chapter of the International Society of Aboriculture), which has a directory to search. Go to www.treesaregood.com .

Also, here is a link to more information on preventative fungicide injections from Purdue University: https://www.purdue.edu/fnr/extension/question-what-can-i-do-to-protect-my-elm-tree-from-the-dutch-elm-disease/

Thank you for reaching out.
