Grass #866271

Asked April 29, 2024, 10:49 AM EDT

The grass in the yard is growing in with significant differentiation. Some is normal but other parts are still low and sparse. The pictures will show the problem better than I can describe it. I can send others if you like.  Do you know what the cause is and, if so, how do I correct it?

Thanks.

Expert Response

Hi, thank you for your email. Grasses this time of year can grow inconsistently depending on the type of grass that is planted. There are several reasons for some of the brown spots. I am attaching a fact sheet for you. But to be sure, you might want to cut a square of the healthy grass leading into the unhealthy grass (including the roots) and bring this in as a sample to the CU Extension Office located at 9595 Nelson Road for proper diagnosis. Thank you.

The taller grass is perennial ryegrass, while the shorter grass is Kentucky bluegrass. Ryegrass grows faster than does bluegrass - especially at this time of the year. Growth rates should even out as we get closer to summer.
