Rose Rosette Disease or normal new growth #866100

Asked April 27, 2024, 3:11 PM EDT

Hello, We bought a house last year with an abundance of old growth roses. I am afraid they may be infected with Rose Rosette Disease. Can you tell me what to look for please? Thank you.

Expert Response

Thank  you for the  photos.I have never heard of, nor do any of my rreferences name a disorder called "rose rosette". I do note on your photos that the bushes have not been pruned, so that malformed branches, suckers, etc. have not been removed. Suckers, because they come from rootstock that may or may not be from the particular rose (most roses are grafted onto a hardier root stock) often bear weird flowers. I don;t see any bugs, nor fungal spots. Please clip a sample of the problem, along with your photos, and bring them to the Plant Clinic for further examination. The Extension clinic, a free service, is located at 569 Hanley Rd. (rte. 238) about 3 miles northeast of Jacksonville. Please call<personal data hidden>  to learn days and hours of operation. Hopefully, the problem can be solved and you will have some beautiful roses in the future!
