Zoo brew compost has strong smell #865786

Asked April 24, 2024, 5:39 PM EDT

I just got half a yard of zoo brew compost from Tawa. It has a strong smell, is warm and gives off steam. Is it safe to use? I want to top dress beds and use it in pots. I spread it out into a layer a few inches thick. Do I need to wait until it stops stinking before I use it? Thanks :-)

Marty,

The Zoo Brew compost you have is okay to use as is. You don't need to do anything or wait to use. Once you do your top dressing, just wet the area down, and this should reduce the smell. Most compost or mulch has a smell to it until it is watered down and then dries out a little. I would not be worried about the smell everything is okay.
