Hello, our campground is requiring certified heat treated firewood to prevent the spread of insects. Could you advise where this type of firewood can be purchase in Michigan?

Wayne County Michigan

Expert Response

Amanda,

Most campgrounds that require heat treated wood also provide safe wood for sale on the premises. If you share which campground you plan to visit, I can get additional details for you and confirm that this will be the case.

My campground actually does sell wood, Walnut Hills in Durand, but it is very expensive for the amount you get so we were looking for an alternative.

Amanda,

Ah, yes that makes sense. We usually refer folks to this website to search for firewood vendors: https://firewoodscout.org/resources/MI

You can call and check to see if they sell certified. Rich from Michigan Kiln-Dried Firewood would likely fit the criteria - he is based in Lapeer I believe.

Thanks!

Ok, thank you for your help! Is there a difference between "heat-treated" and kiln dried? Management is claiming there is.

Hi there - heat-treated is typically preferred because it ensures there are no insects still living in the firewood (certain standard of temperature and length of time), whereas kiln dried doesn't have the same rigorous standard and so might still have insects. Michigan hasn't completely embraced a heat treatment certification program, so it does seem to be at the individual campground level. There is a new staff person with DNR, Vicki Sawicki  - <personal data hidden>  - who is trying to set up a more formal statewide firewood certification program. She might be a good point of contact to see where things stand and who might be a potential supplier around there.
