Planting a Fruit Tree #865645

Asked April 23, 2024, 5:10 PM EDT

Hi. I want to plant 2 fruit trees in my backyard in Canal Winchester Ohio with my grandkids as a project and for them to watch it grow. What would be best and actually grow to produce fruit. Thanks. Jason A. Price

Expert Response

What fun to plant a fruit tree with the grandkids.

I always say when planning an edible crop that you should plant what you like. That being said if it where me, I would steer them toward apples. They are a good crop for Ohio.

You would need two different types of apple trees for good pollination. I have included a link to a chart to help with picking compatible apples and it explains why you need two different ones. You can get into as much of a 'birds and bees' talk as you feel like.

I have also included a couple of fact sheets and bulletins. One is a PDF of a Power Point. There is no transcript, but it will lead you through picking a tree to plant if apples are not for you.

Have fun!!!

Thanks for the response and information.

We purchased two apple and one pear tree today and are going to plant over the weekend.

Take care. JP
