Friend of a friend asked about Garden scourge?? #865164

Asked April 19, 2024, 4:53 PM EDT

A friend of mine sent me this text: I have a friend whose garden had a scourge in it last summer and she thinks it may have come from the soil in a plant she bought and transplanted. Not sure what can be sprayed or dug into the soil to take care of this but you might have an idea- 2 pictures coming !! Someone told her that she’s going to have to let that ground sit for a few years before the virus or nematode or whatever dies out

Expert Response

Did any of the other plants seem to be affected last year?  Did she remove the plant at the end of the season?

Her reply
Had a great garden the year before. Everything is cleaned out at the end of the season.

All plant varieties were affected to some degree.p

Any more insight on what this may be - or what they should do in their garden?

I’ve been asked again by this friend if there’s any updates of what might be wrong with these plants, or the garden.

Without having plant material to test, I can't say definitively what the culprit is, although I don't think nematodes would cause these symptoms.   Either bacterial crown gall or herbicide would be more likely.  One option is to take some of the soil indoors, and plant some bean seeds and/or a tomato transplant in them and see if they develop normally.
