Luminescent worm in home and footwear #859663

Asked February 22, 2024, 3:43 PM EST

There are two pictures included: one is the worm in my boot and the other is a smaller version on a chair. These worms are in my home, clothing, and boots. They are subtly luminescent and most active at night. As indicated in one of the pictures, they seem to move in a semi-transparent film similar to aphid honeydew. I've tried a variety of insecticides and home remedies. None of these products has controlled the organism. Freezing does not kill them. They are not noticeably attracted to food and they are not easily identified during the day. The organism irritates my skin overnight. I would like to remove them from my home I live in town and first noticed these worms about a year ago. I did not travel or change my routine before they appeared.

Expert Response

Hi Joseph,

It's really difficult to say from the photos, although some of the University entomologists may be able to help.

Would it be possible for you to bring a sample to the Extension office in Castle Rock?

Hi,

I will try to collect a sample this weekend and bring it in Monday, 2/26/24.

Thank you,

Great, thank you.  Please bring them in a sealed container; we are open from 8-5pm, but closed 12:30-1:30 for lunch.  If you wish, you can clearly label the container and drop it through the mail slot at any time.

Thanks!

John

Hi, I know it's been a while but I was finally able to collect a sample.  A picture is attached.  I could drop it off at the extension office tomorrow, 5/12/24.  Would that work for you?  Thank you, Joe

Hi Joe,

Based on your photograph, I think I will not be able to ID anything from the sample, sorry.  I do not see any recognizable anatomy.  You can drop off the item if you would like to, but I think we will not be able to determine anything.

Cordially,

John
