35 year old jade plant #852986
Asked October 12, 2023, 8:50 PM EDT
Hello,
We’ve enjoyed a jade plant for over 30 years by largely ignoring it - it has thrived outside non-winter months & inside in winter. Unfortunately due to health reasons we want to find another good home for it. We tried to donate it to MN Arboretum and Bachman’s house including a memorial donation, but they said they don’t have room for it.
Are there unique plant lover sites out there, and/or organizations that accept unique plants with a donation? Or could the U of MN extension group be interested? Welcome your ideas, thank you.

Perhaps a foster parent can be found for it and donate it to the Hennepin County plant sale next year.
Please contact Mr. Straub if this appeals to you or assisted living facilities might be interested is your very beautiful plant.

Thank you for the note. I’ll contact Mr. Straub (on copy) regarding a donation to the 2024 plant sale.
For now, we’ll bring in ‘Mr. Jade’ for the winter one more year. Best,

Good luck and thanks for your generosity, it is a spectacular specimen.
Hello,
Evelyn Locke kindly referred me below to Terry Straub. I’ve emailed Mr. Straub twice but have not heard back.
Is there someone else who can advise me about my donation to the spring plant sale?

I am sorry for the lack of response from the Master Gardener program director. I am also surprised but the program has gotten very big and follow up suffered.
The email contacts above are the contacts for the plant sales. There are two, one in the spring for bedding plants and one in October for houseplants. It would be helpful if you can attach a picture of the spectacular Mr. Jade.

Evelyn - thank you for the response, neglected to send you this sooner. I’ve attached a picture in the past, no worries, reattaching.
My original intention was donating the plant to the MN Arboretum, along with memorial $ donation in memory of my dad. Unfortunately the arboretum doesn’t have room for the plant.
Sis/Nancy/Sue - thank you for taking a look. “Mr. Jade” is nearly 40 years old. He’s an indoor plant in winter, and goes outdoors May through Sept/Oct. The more I ignore him, the better he does. Based on Evelyn’s note below, is Mr Jade something you’d be interested in for the October houseplant sale?

Hi Barbara,
Thank you for contacting us!
Mr. Jade is quite a specimen. Can you give us a rough measurement of his height, circumference, and weight?
If he’s small enough, we’d love to include him in our Houseplant Sale on October 6. I say “small enough” because it’s difficult to sell large plants. They’re hard for customers to transport.
I look forward to hearing from you, Barb. Thanks again for reaching out to us!

Hello,
The Jade is about 3ft high & 3ft diameter. (picture taken by a standard 3ft deck railing). It is heavy, which is why I have it on coasters.

I have passed on the plants dimensions and Sue will contact you. Good luck.i hesitate to suggest Mr. Jade could be used to propagate many medium sized plants and live on.
