Dead area on boxwood
Do I need to do anything in response to the dead area on my boxwood? I don't use chemicals so I'm not sure what happened. I have sprayed Rebel deer repellent but I don't think I used it on the plant.

spruce trees
I have a trio of 45-year-old spruces in my backyard, two with double leaders. Many lower branches have died and been removed, and there's die-back in the canopy which I cannot reach to prune. Also, there's yellowing and dropping of needles from the ends of branches. None of this is new...just progressive over the eleven years I've lived here. Would VCE be able to send someone to my home in Blacksburg to have a look and advise on whether they should be taken down? I would hate to do that, but if there's a danger that they might topple, well... Many thanks!

Got compost?
Hello! I'm looking for local sources of compost. I need 5 different kinds and can only find 2 in the Lowes and Home Depot. I am trying to make Mel's mix from the square foot gardening method. Any help you can provide will be wonderful. I will set up my own compost pile soon but will not have the needed volume at season start. Thanks! Charlene

Bat droppings on table in gazebo
We regularly find bat droppings on the eating table in our gazebo, but when we check in the ceiling crevices in the daytime to see if a bat is there, we can't see anything up there. We thought they fly at night and roost by day. Today there appears to be a very small dark place that could something living but even with binoculars we can't be sure. Having droppings on the eating table regularly is both unsanitary and inconvenient and we would appreciate advice on how to address this problem. Is there a deterrent we could apply to the gazebo ceiling that wouldn't hurt the bat? Why can't we see it in the daytime?

Can you identify whether this is a fungus on my plum tree?
I have a fungus (I presume) that has taken over a plum tree in my yard. I have attached a picture of it. Can you identify it and let me know how to get rid of it and its effect on the fruit?

tree wilt
We have a large Maple tree in our front yard that is browning and the leaves look wilted despite all the rain we have had. There are dark streaks on the trunk. Can someone help us identify what is causing this and if there is a treatment. This is not a sugar maple but its a large and beautiful addition to our yard.

chokecherry
Hello, I am in Blacksburg and I would like to plant chokecherry in order to make jelly, wine, and attract wildlife. It doesn't seem to be carried by local nurseries. Where I can find it, and are some varieties better than others for this region?
