Water for Seed starting and seedlings

Hi! I am starting seeds indoors. Most literature details how to water the seeds but doesn't say what type of water. I have a deep well with higher salt content. Distilled and Reverse Osmosis water is expensive. Can I use rain water either boiled or with a touch of bleach to help prevent damping off (which I have had before)? Thanks!

What are these insects?

On Jan. 19, 2013 between 3 and 4 pm, I took thirteen photographs of some sort of swarming insects in the sky behind a large Juniper tree in my backyard. The temperature was around 50 degrees and there was a light breeze from the SW. Do you have any idea what these things might be?

nitrogen fertilizer use this spring

Hi! I have just received the soil test results for my garden. The pH is perfect. The recommendation is for just sodium nitrate. However, my plants get an overload of sodium from my deep well water (the leaves turn brown on the edges). Because I need to water my garden fairly often, I worry that the extra salt load will further harm them. I need help picking another form of nitrogen (if that's advisable) and a conversion chart comparing forms of nitrogen (like urea, etc.). I am also concerned about the affects of different nitrogen types on soil pH. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
Thanks!

All my blueberry plant leaves are turning purple. 2 cold nights last week. PH is about 6.7. I think the gauge works.I use elemental sulfur or ammonia sulfate to keep ph lower. (I know it needs to be lower, still!) Thanks for your thoughts! Rick

Grass under a holly tree

I planted new grass seed in the yard and all has come up except a small patch (3x5) Under a holly tree. When I water the grass it goes on the tree then drips down on the grass. Is it something on the leafs that kill the grass?

Nematodes

I have a significant nematode infection in my garden--carrots are loaded with little root knots. I understand about choosing resistant crops and crop roation, marigolds, etc. I have read about Saponins of Quilloja Saponaria as being a possible treatment for this issue. Any idea if this is any good?

Lespedeza in flower bed

I have an infestation of lespedeza in my flower bed. Last fall I sprayed glyphosphate on it. But it's back and worse than ever. What can you recommend? I have lots of daffodil bulbs in this area so am concerned about losing them. Maybe I should remove them before proceeding with a herbicide? Do I also need a pre-emergent? Should I treat the lawn that borders this flower bed also? Thanks so much for your help. I am plagued by this noxious weed!

yellow grape leaves, poor production

Hi! I have two 3 year old grape vines. This is the first fruiting year. I have occasionally sprayed with Sevin or "Worry Free". One plant has occasional slightly chlorotic leaves. The other is getting yellow leaves with yellow veining first! Very different from the first. PH is about 6.6. Thanks!
