What are the white worms that are destroying our bushes?

We have short white worms that are defoliating leaves on our bushes around the house. They have eaten all the leaves and are now moving on to ferns and plants. Last year we had a few but this year we are seeing hundreds. We do not like to use pesticides but don't think we have any choice. Help, please.

Horse Slobbers

Our horses are slobbering from pasturing where there must be the fungus Rhizoctonia present on clover leaves, possibly in other legumes like vetch. As I've read in numerous discussions online, the fungus produces a toxin called slaframine that stimulates the salivary glands of horses causing them to drool. Last year the problem became evident in only one spot of the pasture, and was easily understood as we had a cool, wet spring and summer. Having learned from that experience, I have rotated the horses (two) around much more rapidly (using intensive rotational grazing, they are on their third lap around a two-acre pasture) and have mowed behind and ahead of them to keep the grass short. Also, this year has been hot and dry, so I did not expect The Slobbers to return. They have, and I am at a loss as to what to do so that the horses can actually graze. Thank you for any helpful advice you may be able to offer. Todd Mower
