Little Tiny Fast Flying Bugs

I enjoy having plants of different types in my home. I have for years. Lately, I've had a problem with little tiny fast flying bugs. My guess is, that they are nats. Someone once suggested spraying a water soap mixture on the top soil. That killed the plant. What can I do to get rid of these pesky bugs without losing my plants?
