We have a large old Silver Lace Leaf Maple that has developed some kind of fungus on the areas where LARGE branches were removed about 4 yrs ago because they extended over the house. This tree has squirrels on it all the time because we have a feeder on it. Really don't want to lose the tree & other than two places where the fungi are, the tree is very healthy. Suggestions?

Tent caterpillars

I have destroyed a total of 5 tent caterpillar nests at separate times so far. 2 were in one of my plum trees and 2 in one apple tree and 1 in another apple tree. I live in Colfax, ND and have not seen any other nests here.
What is the best, safest way to control these pests? I have two dogs, a cat, and a daycare center across the street from me so am hesitant to spray poisons ( which probably won't get into the nests anyway).

Round up damage to ash trees

I live in southern Richland Co and the ash trees on the south side of my yard look like they have damage from what I think is Round UP. Trees on other sides of yard and in the yard are OK. They have short shriveled up leaves on the bottom 1/3. The tops look somewhat OK. It started last year and is worse this year. Is there anything that can be done to help them survive? I read that a very heavy dose of Miracle Grow or nitrogen can help.

unhealthy rubarb

I transplanted lots of adult older rhubarb plants from friends healthy rhubarb bushes, The new growth is slow growing & their not thick & bushy. more long & sparse. the big leaves are all torn up from insects. I planted them 4 years ago, out in the open lots of wind. Also never cut them back or protected it from 30 below winters. This year I put new organic soil with fertilizer mixed, dug grass out 4 ft circle for more room. Im covering it with mulch & dried leaves for winter. What else can I do? I thought of transplanting them back along the garage wall.

Mildew in Ninebark 'Diablo' shrub

My 12- to 15-year-old Diablo Ninebark shrubs have had downy mildew for 3 or 4 years. Each year I prune branches out that have mildew. I disinfect my pruners between cuts, clean up as much as I can around the bushes, and throw all the leaves and branches in the garbage. The problem becomes more severe each year. These bushes get lots of airflow around and through them. I'm keeping the centers open for air flow.

I am wondering if I can give the bushes a hard pruning this spring before they leaf out, and if that will help control the mildew. How far down can I prune them -- is a foot from the ground too much? Or would I be better trying to control the problem with a fungicide. My thought is that if I get rid of as much of the mildew as I can, I would have an easier time controlling it with a fungicide. I have not yet used a fungicide.

Sick Colorado Blue Spruce

Hi we live in Richland county, ND. We have around 300 Colorado Blue Spruce trees that 3 years ago were very healthy and green. The last 2 years we have noticed there needles have thined down tremendously. We have even lost 25 this spring. What could be going on? See attached photos. Thank you. Brandi Anderson
