Peaches are rotting on the tree-- looks like a bruise

This is the first time our peach tree is producing fruit. We had about 100 peaches at first. We tried thinning quite a few. Now about every day just about all of the fruit at the end of each branch is developing a spot which looks mushy almost like a bruise. What can be causing this and what should we do to protect the remaining peaches? We only have about 50 left at this point. It is very hot and dry right now. Fruit is small and still hard.

Can you identify this snake that bit me?

The hospital identified it as a copperhead but I don't think so. At least I got antivenin and recovered. Sorry, all I have is a picture of the dead snake in a plastic bag, but its markings are fairly visible.
