American Bird Mite Characteristics

1. Is it known whether this species can complete its life-cycle on Human vs. bird or rodent blood? 2. Is it known how long this species can survive without a suitable (define) meal? 3. Does this species spend most of its time on or off host? The available information on these issues is inconsistent, inconclusive or contradictory ... and accurate information could make a significant difference in battling an infestation, which we have.

How much cold can wasabi tolerate?

I live in the Finger Lakes region of New York state and would like to try growing wasabi. I have a small spring-fed stream with hardwood tree cover. My only concern is how cold our winters get. Is there any data on the range of acceptable winter temperatures? Are there any wasabi varieties that can handle colder temperatures? Any cultivation practices to deal with the cold? Thanks

What Animal Did This?!

Found this in the forest on our land. The tree was already on the ground. It was solid and not at all rotten. It was shredded (please see photo). What animal did this? Why?

Plant ID

Hello, I planted this in my garden that I believe was grown from a packet of English daisy seeds. It overwintered and grew into something unrecognizable to me this year. It is approximately 4 feet tall with alternating leaves, and the flowers resemble small starfruit to me. They are green with light pink tips. Any help would be appreciated.

One cactus growing through another?

My saguaro cactus was a rescue plant. It was tiny when I got it many years ago. As it grew I repotted it etc. This other "cucumber" cactus or succulent just appeared about five years ago and has been spreading and growing like crazy. Just this spring these sprouts of what appear to be saguaro seem to be growing out of the sides of the cucumber cactus. My guess is that the saguaro was grafted on the other which served as a base. The base started growing separately and now the saguaro is sending shoots through the inside of the cucumber cactus. Is that possible? I live in Upstate NY and take the cactus inside during the winter. It gets plenty of sun and rain during the summer and seems to be doing very well.
