Lavendar Munstead

winter kill: How should I prune what remains? How can I revive these plants. When is the best time of year to divide this plant? Is now a good time to do that? You may share my question IF you don't include my email. Thanks. Carol S

I just relocated to Minnesota (Winona - Zones 3-4) from Connecticut and found a Corylus Avellana Contorta in the backyard, landscaped garden that is nearing the end of it life. About half of the shrub is dead with numerous patches of white, plaque-like growth. The other half is leafing but not too much this spring. I really like the shrub (esp. in winter) and would like to replace. Can I get this shrub in Minnesota or is this climate just too cold? Thank you.

Spotted wing Drosophila (SWD)

I am fairly certain that my raspberries became infested with SWD last year. I had beautiful berries but a few hours after picking, I noticed very tiny worms crawling on them. They were so small, that they actually appeared to be part of the berries (until they started moving). We lost a significant amount of the berries due to these worms. Now that the berries have started to bud, I am wondering if there is something that I can do to prevent or at least control the worms this year. I have read the publications about picking prior to full ripeness, collecting fruit that has fallen etc. I thought I read something about larvae in the soil and spraying the berries. I don't have an issue with spraying but I am wondering when is the best time to spray and what is the most effective spray to use? I want to get out in front of the problem this year. Thanks!! Tom

Meyer Lemon in Pot

What’s eating my Meyer Lemon? Creating holes in leaves. Shiny “sap” on leaves and stem?

A new lawn was started last summer. It was seeded with a commercial type of lawn seed. Most of the lawn had good germination but there are areas where nothing grew, not even weed type grasses like dandelions or quack grasses. The soil in the areas was loosened and reseeded with blue grass seed but that didn't grow either. The areas also had some lawn fertilizer added for newly seeded lawns. What is causing these areas to not have any growth of any type?

Dormant Nodes on Quackgrass Rhizomes

As fall approaches, I'm wondering what the dormant nodes in my yard will do, if anything. After applications of Round Up, the soil's surface is completely free of ALL vegetation, including quackgrass, so it's easy to see if any sprouts are starting. I plan to seed with fescue in September. 1. Do quackgrass dormant nodes activate during any particular time(s) of year? 2. What do dormant nodes need in order to become active? 3. Is my understanding correct that quackgrass will begin growing earlier in the spring than tall fescue and thus be easy to identify (taller than other grasses) for spot spraying with Round Up? Thank you for your help. Mary Hale

Have there been problems with the Royal Frost Birch? We are thinking of planting one and it would be in an area where our white spire birch had problems with birch borer and miner about 10 years ago.
