Our mountain ash tree is about 16 years old and suddenly is growing white growth at the base of the trunk. Up close it looks like tiny white woody mushrooms. It is growing up the trunk very rapidly. No damage to trunk that we can see. I think it's a European mountain ash.

Using ash in compost

We have a customer who is wondering whether he can burn a brush pile on his garden and whether the ash would be good for compost for his garden next year. He plants primarily squash.

Linden tree top

We planted a linden tree 3 yeqrs ago approx. and the top foot or more does not stand up straight but bends way over, as if the tree hasn't the strength to hold it up. Can we justncut off the top, or is there a better solution?

Butterfly / Hummingbird Garden

Wayne, who is a resident in the Traverse County Browns Valley Nursing Home is preparing next years Butterfly/Hummingbird garden and is looking for assistance. He plans on a 6 x 16 garden

1) Wayne wants to start the seeds for his garden indoors, but in proper time for the seedlings to be large enough to transplant when the time comes here in Traverse County. (He is using the date May 15th)

2) Next he is wondering what plants are best suited for attracting Butterflies and Hummingbirds and are fit to grow in our zone.

Canada Red Cherry Tree shoots

For years we had a Canada red cherry tree in our yard that sent shoots up everywhere. Last summer we pulled out the tree in hopes of getting rid of the small trees that were coming up all over, which we just mowed off. After the tree was gone it seemed that the number of offshoots decreased, but now this spring I see many more coming up again. Is there anyway to get rid of these without having to dig up the entire front lawn???
