Arborvitaes 6-7' tall- The last couple of years we've lost 7-8. These were planted 8 - 9 years ago. They are in a line at our lake property to create privacy. They have been dying here and there within the line of 25ish. They line up towards the lake and we face south. Mostly shaded during the summer. We do water during the summer if no rain? My dad asks if putting leaves/grass around the bottoms hurt them. They turn the most brown in the spring but can tell they are stressed during the winter. The line of trees now look toothless/terrible so looking for advice on what we should replace them with?!?!? I don't want something to get too tall...we love our view of the lake! Thank you-

Two small apple trees planted last year, Honey Crisp and Snowsweet. I placed a twisty, hard plastic tape around the trunks of each for rodent protection. Should that be taken off? It seems to be made to expand with the growth of the tree.

Call duck delima

I got some call ducklings this spring. (June)Things where going fine. I took them for a bath at 5 days, they where dirty, in my tub. Water was baby warm and only 4 fingers deep. They all seamed to be having fun when all of a sudden one stoud strate up like a runner, fellow over on to it's back, did the back stroke then put its head under water while upside down and swimming. I pulled it out and calmed it down. After a few minutes it was fine.
Though the cource of the year, (a wherd year at that), I only have 2 of the original 16 left. All the ones that performed are died. Is this an illness? New to duck. Debby

Tree recommendation for poor soil and shade

We have a cabin on Fairy Lake in Todd County. We would like to provide a wall of trees for privacy. We are open to either conifers or tall deciduous shrubs. The soil is poor, and the area would not receive much sunshine. I have studied your website, but a recommendation would be very helpful. My brother does not want arborvitae. We would like a tree/shrub that will grow at least 8-10 feet tall. Considerations have been Amur Maple shrubs, American Cranberry shrubs (shorter), Black Spruce, Black Hills Spruce, and Mugo Pine. We were discouraged from CO Spruce due to disease. Thank you so much for your help! Mary Stacke

Peaking Cherry tree disease

I have a couple of Peking Cherry trees that are losing their leaves and have numerous small square and rectangular bites from the bark of the tree. They are half way up the tree and located in mostly one area. Can I spray the tree with fruit spray? What should I do about the marks in the bark?
