Mowing poppy bed after bloom

Hey there, got a question. My grandmother has had a big bed of poppies for several decades, but in recent years only a few bloom and the bed is mostly overrun with grass, milkweed, thistles, and other junk. On impulse last fall I mowed the bed bc it was just so ugly, and this spring I still see oodles of poppies starting to come up. It'll be interesting to see how many bloom. Anyway, I dread the return of the weeds through the summer and am wondering if I could continue mowing the bed occassionally after the poppies have finished blooming and died. My mom's worried that mowing it would be detrimental to the poppies, so I wanted to ask for advice. If you need photos for some reason, I'm happy to provide them. Thank you! Danielle Stockdale

What’s killing my dianthus?!

At first I thought it was those big ants I’ve seen in the past or even ground hornets until I notice the grass area next to it...we’ve had moles and/or voles but their trails were more obvious, bigger. Help!!!

My grandpa just put a chain link fence around his yard and he would like to cover it with vines. His ideal cover would be a flowering perennial. I suggested honeysuckle or trumpet vines, but my parents have tried to grow trumpet vines and honeysuckles on their chain link and have issues with it freezing and not returning in the spring. Ideally, my grandpa would like to use clematis, but would they be ok on chain link? Any thoughts/suggestions will be appreciated!

I have dense woods behind my house and as I thinned out the buckthorn, I discovered some interesting bushes that are about 4 feet tall and have deep wine colored leaves all summer. The leaves are about 4 inches long, shaped somewhat like a chokecherry with very small serrated edges. Obviously, it can grow in deep shade. Any ideas what it might be? Many thanks Pat MacLean

Pressure Treated Lumber for Raised Vegetable Beds

Hello, My Name is Steve Askelson and I am a teacher at Neveln Elementary School in Austin, Mn.. As part of a science course of study at our school we are planning to create a raised plant and vegetable garden. Our question is, "Is it safe to use pressure treated lumber to construct the raised beds? We realize that over the past few years, chemicals used to treat the lumber has changed, but even so, are these chemicals safe to use around food and the consumption of that food? Is the leaching of those chemicals a realistic problem to even be concerned with? What are appropriate materials to use in constructing raised beds to grow consumable foods? Do you have any ideas or plans that have worked for the construction of raised beds? Any advise in growing plants in raised beds? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Steve
