greenhouse

Am I allowed to construct a consumer-grade greenhouse on my property? If so, what, if any, permits or regulations do I need to follow? Would my rights be protected under MRTFA (I grow and sell seeds, plants, and produce at farmer's markets and online)? I live in Livonia, MI on a 1/4 acre corner plot. One side of the greenhouse would meet my garage and another side would meet a neighbors tree line (privacy trees, tall, bushy). THe other two sides would face my lawn.

Water purification for 250 gallon rain catchment tank

We have a community garden in our park and we built late last summer a rain catchment shed that we are going to use to fill a 250 gallon tank. With the rain water that we did catch, we did have some algae start to grow in the tank. What can we use or purchase to purify the water to be able to water our gardens? Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks Sam Brewster - Cavanaugh Park Community Garden, Lansing MI

Agave Weberi - Fungus or Scale and Treatment?

In the last week our beautiful Agave plant has acquired yellow and brown spots on the leaves. After an online search I believe our plant is Agave Weberi and I think it is either scale or fungus. Can you help me identify the problem and suggest the best treatment? I took a photo of the entire plant so you see it is protected by a wall and surrounded by cactus. It is in part shade this time of year. We don't water it. Thanks for your help.

Yuca Hardwood stem propogation

I have obtained several Yuca hardwwod cuttings to begin growing Yuca, or Cassava. (not Yucca) My field that will be used for this crop is very heavy soil and very, very wet through April. I need 8 months of growing season, ending Nov 1, so I need to start right about now. 1. Should I start the cuttings now in this field? 2. or Should I start the cuttings in the greenhouse now and transplant May 1? 3. Do you have a better option? Fred

Zoysia grass vs. St. Augustine for heavy shade

I'm curious as to how well Zoysia grass (in sod form) will hold up in an area that is well shaded vs. St. Augustine sod. This is a small back yard, facing east, with a large fence and two large shade trees blocking early and mid morning sun. During late spring and summer months, as the sun moves south and the west, it will receive a few hours (approx 3) of direct sunlight. But as the day goes on the sun eventually becomes blocked by parts of the south fence line and then the single story house.

Our customer would like to have Zoysia for durability, drought tolerance and lower maintenance, but I am unsure if it will receive enough sunlight and don't want to throw (their) good money after bad.

We've also looked into Turffalo, but the customer doesn't want to invest the time in plugs.

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

I have a horse that has 'weak quarters'.

I have a Quarter Horse gelding with weak quarters on both front legs. He has been shod and now I see cracks going from the back of the heel area moving down towards the toe. How do I treat this issue? Is there a supplement that I can feed to help the hoof wall grow out better? He has been in the pasture during the day, and in the barn at night. Some of the pasture has standing water, should I keep him in a high/dry area where his hoofs do not come in contact with standing water?
Thank you.

Hedge for a screen in shaded area

I am looking for a native bush/shrub that will grow at least 8ft. high. It is in an area that does not receive much sun, a little bit filtered as the sun shifts. I prefer an evergreen and would like a rather fast growing one too. We have heavy clay soil here as well.

Edible landscape ground cover?

Hi, can you think of an edible ground cover that would work on the median trip in the front yard between the side walk and the street? This would be in full sun, I could add amendments if needed, watering would be one time per week in the summer, and the area would be isolated enough to not be a problem if is something that spreads easily. Edible fruit or leaves are OK. One item coming to mind would be low laying rosemary. Any other ideas?

Worm in goat's milk

Today, when straining my goat's milk, I noticed something floating in the milk. I put the milk through a paper towel for containment and found a worm. It's about one-third of an inch long, and kind of a transparent pinkish color and very thin and thread-like. I strain her milk every time (as well as practice good sanitation with my goats), but this is the first encounter with this issue. Is someone able to help me? Thank you for your time!

dividing dahlias and replanting bulbs now?

Hi! I just dug up my dahlias for the first time and divided them and now I have 6 new plants. All the references say to store them but why can't I just replant them now? I'm in Portland, Oregon. I know normally it's too early to plant dahlias but the bulbs were already in the ground anyway (I've never dug them up before and they've been fine for 6 years), why couldn't I just put them back in the ground in a new location? Thank you!

Poultry disease/deaths

I have a small group of chickens, and have recently lost a few to illness. Some symptoms were different in each chicken (including partial paralysis). I just lost another one last night that had diarrhea, lethargy, limping, a distended bloated abdomen, and emaciation (her breastbone was super sharp). NONE of the vets in my area treat chickens, but I took her to a Crosby vet that handles livestock and he examined her and gave her antibiotics. We also gave her de-wormer (Wazine). She seemed to be doing better yesterday morning, but went downhill really fast and died in the early evening yesterday. My problem: How can I figure out what is going on with my chickens so I don't lose any more? Our chickens are essentially pets we also use for egg production. We love them, but I can't afford to spend a lot of money to figure this out. I have the chicken on ice--is there anywhere I can send or bring her to for testing?

Red Wigglers for vegetable gardening compost

Could you please tell me where (locally) I can purchase reg wigglers for use in composting for my "first" vegetable garden? I am trying to do this the right way but after much searching online there is nothing locally; Montgomery, Walker counties, that I have been able to find to pick-up/purchase. Surely we have our very own red wigglers her in our local counties?
Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
