I'm concerned about my martagons--the leaves are turning brown, I thought it might be botrytis, and have been spraying with FUngoil and removing the stems and leaves as they become yellow and turn brown. I don't really see the dot that seems to characterize pics of botrytis and now I'm thinking maybe this is natural maturation, but it seems early. This is year two of this condition in my garden. Any insight?

peach treees

My peach tree has been struggling with some sort of disease for the last few years. It appears as a gelatinous orange substance in the spring and I have pruned off branches that are infected. Now it has appeared at the base of the tree. What is this disease and is there any way for me to help the tree recover? Will it spread to other fruit trees nearby. I have some apple trees and an Italian prune nearby. Thanks, Barbara

plant identification

I found a "weed" in my gardens which was very prolific. (It spread very quickly and was quite healthy.) It has long narrow leaves which are spotted. It looked a little like a marijuana plant. It also looked somewhat like a four o'clock. My best description is that it is somewhere between these two types of plants. The average height was about three feet. It was easy to pull up and had a limited root system. Instead of flowers there were some green globules. Do you have any idea what this might be or where I could search by way of picture for this plant? It is nothing more than a matter of curiosity. However, if it were invasive, I would want to know that. Thank you.

I still have my poinsettia from Christmas and it still produces red leaves. It has been sitting in the same kitchen window since January; it is about 15 inches. I just started reading about the plant online and saw that I should have pruned it to 4 -6 inches way back in March in order to have a flowering plant in December. Is it way too late to go through the process I read about or should I leave it be now.
Thank you.

This macintosh tree is 10-15 years old and has never had flowers. I did a lot of pruning the past 2 years, and light pruning almost every year. As you can see there is a lot of new growth, mainly those pesky sucker branches. The lower limbs near the snow line were badly chewed by rabbits, I remover 3 of them, and opened up the middle, but it doesn't look like it now with all the new shoots. I'm about to cut it down. What do you suggest? Thanks Les Anderson anderslc@usfamily.net

Borers

What is the best way to save a tree being eaten away by borers? There are tunnel-like holes on the tree trunk and major limbs. I've used Bayer Tree Protect and Feed and that seems to work for a bit, but does not last. Looking for recommendations.

Leaf Discoloration

Three different woody shrubs (or small trees) are displaying spots of leaf discoloration in our garden. A Ribes aureum has dropped all of its inner leaves and its outer leaves have angular leaf spots that are a light brown color. Next to this currant is an unidentified Salix that is also experiencing leaf discoloration, however, this discoloration appears to be caused by very small larvae on the underside of the leaves. Each of these plants are in close proximity to a grove of Aspen that are believed to be infected with Cytospora. In another location in the garden a Betula fontinalis has insects within the leaf tissue causing it to blister. I have attached pictures of the infected plants. Please help me identify the pests and possible treatments?

Emptying the nest

Recently one of our chickens went broody. We successfully used our broody cage and she is now back to her usual self. When she was prevented from sitting on the nest all day one of our other chickens began kicking/scraping all of the clean straw out of the nest. She has continued this habit for a couple of weeks now. As soon as I replace the straw she empties it out again! We have had a reduction in the number of eggs laid by the others, some laid in the house and broken and I wonder if they are all more reluctant to lay because their usually cosy space is continually being emptied? I also wonder if putting the chicken in question in the broody cage herself would help?

Resource for Farmers

Hi, My name is Beth Carrier with List Your Harvest, Inc. Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I wanted to introduce myself to you because I have developed an Online Market Place called Listyourharvest.com, for local farmers to market their goods directly to the local population. I am contacting you specifically because I am looking for some advice and assistance. I have found many ways to reach local consumers, but reaching the farmers who would be helped the most by this tool has proven to be difficult. This tool can be used to inform the public what is available at farmers' markets and farm stands and each farmer has control over what they post for sale. I was wondering who in your organization I should be talking to about this. I have worked with local groups in my immediate area who have agreed to post an informative article which I have written, and promoted Listyourharvest.com on their websites and social media. I was also wondering if there was a monthly publication which you produce that I would advertise in or use to educate farmers about this newly developed tool. You can check out listyourharvest.com and let us know how we can help the farmers in your area benefit from this. Your feedback is welcome!

What is this thorny vine?

This thorny vine has been growing in with columbines. Pictures are attached - my apologies for their blurriness. It has 3/8 inch spines all along the stem, as well as smaller spines irregularly, especially near the base of the plant, which appears almost woody. Our first guess was raspberries, except for the fact that it vines rather than grows upright.
We are interested in the ID of this plant, as well as how to control it. Preferably without harming the flowers it is growing amongst.

I have a 20 to 25 year old evergreen (blue spruce) with tips or ends of branches that are turning brown. The brown branches seem to be especially on one side of the tree. Also the brown branches go all the way to the top. On the end of some branches, the needles have completley fallen off. In the spring, the tree looked healthy with new growth. In early June, I had the tree trimmed up from the bottom about four feet. A few weeks later we had a terrible wind and rain storm. I wonder if that could have anything to do with this problem. Is there anything I can do to help!!!! I don't want to lose this tree. Thank you very much!
